What generative music is

A normal track is a recording: someone performed it once, and you replay that one performance. Generative music removes the recording. Instead, a composer writes rules — a key and scale, a chord progression, how dense the melody should be, how long to rest between phrases, how the piece should slowly evolve — and a machine performs those rules forever. Brian Eno, who coined the term, compared it to gardening: you plant the system, then it grows on its own.

Our stations work exactly that way. Each one is a hand-tuned recipe performed by a deterministic engine built on the Web Audio API. The piano is a real sampled piano; the choices — which note, when, how softly — are made live, note by note, using music-theory constraints so the performance can be surprising but never wrong.

Why it can't trigger a copyright claim

Everything on Free Safe Music is cleared for monetized use, but the generative stations are safe in a stronger sense: there is nothing to claim. Content ID and systems like it work by matching your audio against a database of known recordings. A generative performance is created the moment you press play and never existed before — there is no recording of it anywhere, so there is nothing to match. It contains no samples of other songs and imitates no specific work. This is as close to structurally claim-proof as music gets.

Never looping actually matters

Most "10 hours of rain" or "lofi to study to" streams are a loop — usually 30 to 60 minutes of material repeated. Your brain notices. Familiarity creeps in at the edge of attention, and background sound that was helping you focus becomes a pattern you anticipate. A generative station has no loop point: sections drift, layers fade in and out, phrases never come back in the same shape. It stays background — which is the entire job.

Seeds: replay or share a performance

Under each player is a seed — the number the performance grows from. Same station, same seed: note-for-note the same performance, however long you listen. Keep the link to return to one you liked, or hit new seed for a performance no one has ever heard. It's a small thing, but it means a favorite hour of music is never lost, without us storing a single audio file.

FAQ

Is generative music really copyright-safe?

Yes — more fundamentally than any licensed track. The music is composed by an algorithm in your browser while you listen. It is not a recording of anyone’s work, it contains no samples of existing songs, and no two performances are identical. There is no recording in existence for a Content ID system to match against.

Does it ever loop or repeat?

No. The engine performs continuously from a stream of random decisions — which notes to play, when to rest, how sections evolve. A ten-hour session never plays the same passage twice. That is different from "long" ambient videos, which are usually a loop of 30–60 minutes of material.

What is a seed?

Every performance starts from a number called a seed, shown under the player. The same station with the same seed always produces the same performance, so you can bookmark or share a link to a performance you liked. A new seed is a new, never-heard performance.

Does this use AI to generate audio?

No audio is AI-generated. The sound is performed live by a deterministic music engine — real piano samples and synthesizers driven by music-theory rules (scales, chord tones, phrase structure). Nothing is rendered on a server and nothing is fetched from an AI model while you listen.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Completely free, no account, no signup. It runs in your browser, which is also why we can afford to give it away — there is no streaming server bill.
