What you’re hearing

Brown noise — a random signal whose energy is concentrated in the low frequencies, falling off six decibels per octave as pitch rises. The name has nothing to do with the color: it comes from Brownian motion, the jittery random walk of particles that the signal mathematically resembles. In the ear, that low tilt is what makes brown noise feel like a distant waterfall or an airliner cabin — a deep, soft wash with none of the hiss that makes white noise fatiguing.

Brown noise vs. white noise vs. pink noise

All three are random signals; they differ in how energy is spread across frequencies. White noise spreads energy equally everywhere, which the ear hears as bright and hissy — like an untuned TV. Pink noise tilts downward at three decibels per octave, softer than white but still airy — often compared to steady rainfall. Brown noise tilts twice as steeply, putting most of its energy in the lows: deeper, rounder, and for many people the least intrusive of the three over long sessions.

Which one is “best” is genuinely personal — there is no strong evidence that any particular color outperforms the others for everyone. The honest advice: brown tends to suit people who find white noise harsh, and it masks low rumbles (traffic, HVAC, snoring) especially well because its energy sits in the same register.

Brown noise for sleep, study, and focus

What noise demonstrably does is mask unpredictable sound behind a steady, predictable wash — the interruptions are what wake you or break concentration, and masking smooths them over. That’s the whole mechanism; it’s acoustics, not medicine. Brown noise has also become popular in ADHD communities as a focus aid — the reports are widespread and worth taking seriously as experience, but the controlled evidence is thin, so we’ll leave the claims at that.

For sleep, set the volume just above the quietest disturbance you’re trying to cover — masking works at surprisingly low levels, and quieter is more comfortable over eight hours. For study, slightly louder. It runs indefinitely either way.
